A Beginner’s Guide to Choosing Your First Cigar in Ubud

Knowing how to choose a cigar is one of those skills that feels more complicated than it needs to be, until someone knowledgeable walks you through it. At Pinstripe Bar, a cocktail bar in Ubud with a curated cigar humidor showcasing Asia’s finest selection, the team does exactly that: guides first-time smokers through the process with the same care they bring to every cocktail recommendation. This guide covers the essentials before you arrive, so you can step into the humidor with confidence rather than hesitation.

What Makes a Good First Cigar

A good first cigar is one that does not overwhelm you. The single biggest mistake beginners make is starting too strong, too large, or both. A well-chosen first cigar should be mild enough to be enjoyable, short enough to finish comfortably, and well-constructed enough to burn evenly from the first light to the final draw.

The goal of the first experience is not to prove anything. It is to determine whether cigar smoking suits your palate and your pace. A cigar that achieves that modestly and well is worth far more than an impressive label that leaves you feeling unwell.

Why Beginners Should Start Mild

A mild cigar delivers flavour without the ntine intensity that can cause dizziness or nausea in those who are new to smoking. If you smoke too large or too strong a cigar from the start, you may end up feeling exhausted and unwell before the cigar is finished. Starting mild means your first experience belongs entirely to the pleasure of the smoke rather than the effort of managing it.

How to Choose a Cigarico

Understanding how to choose a cigar comes down to four practical considerations: strength, size, time, and quality. Getting these right removes most of the uncertainty from the decision.

Understanding Strength and Flavour

Strength and body are related but distinct. Strength refers to the nicotine content, meaning the physical effect the cigar has on you. Body refers to the richness and texture of the smoke on your palate. For beginners, a mild-to-mild-medium-strength cigar is the right starting point. A Connecticut shade wrapper, light golden in colour and known for its smooth, creamy profile with notes of cedar and gentle sweetness, is widely regarded as the perfect choice for first-time smokers.

Choosing a Comfortable Cigar Size

The size of a cigar determines both the smoking experience and the duration. As a general guide, use this reference to match your choice to the time you have available:

SizeLengthRing GaugeSmoking TimeBest For
Corona5½ inches42~55 minutesBalanced wrapper and filler flavour
Robusto5 inches50~50 minutesRich flavour, cool smoke, ideal for beginners
Toro6 inches50~65 minutesLonger smoke, fuller complexity
Short Corona4 inches42~35 minutesQuick smoke, lighter experience

A Robusto or Corona is the right choice for a first evening. The wider ring gauge of the Robusto produces a cooler, more comfortable smoke that allows the blend’s complexity to develop without becoming harsh.

Choosing Quality Over Price

A higher price tag does not always guarantee an exceptional cigar, but a very cheap cigar almost always reflects the quality of the tobacco within it. Life is too short to smoke mediocre cigars. A well-constructed cigar from a reputable brand, at a reasonable price, will consistently outperform a poorly made one, regardless of the label. Prioritise construction and brand reputation over novelty.

Best Cigars for Beginners

A uniformed cigar sommelier in a burgundy vest lighting a premium hand-rolled cigar with a blue-flame torch lighter over a black ashtray, with a crystal rocks glass of whisky and an open red-velvet cigar box on the table and a warmly lit bar in the background

The best cigars for beginners share a common profile: mild-to-medium strength, a smooth, even burn, and a flavour that builds gently rather than hitting hard on the first draw.

Mild and Easy Smoking Options

Connecticut shade-wrapped cigars are the universal starting recommendation. Their creamy, gentle character, with notes of cedar, almonds, and subtle sweetness, is forgiving for new palates and consistently enjoyable. Dominican Republic tobaccos, known for their smooth elegance, pair particularly well with this approach.

Beginner-Friendly Premium Cigars

At Pinstripe Bar’s humidor, the team can guide you toward premium selections within the Cohiba, La Galera, and Cavalier ranges that suit a beginner’s palate. A milder profile within a prestigious brand offers the best of both worlds: quality construction and a flavour profile that does not punish inexperience.

Common Mistakes First-Time Smokers Make

Even with good intentions, first-time smokers often make the same avoidable errors. Knowing what they are before you choose means your first cigar experience is shaped by pleasure rather than unnecessary discomfort.

Choosing a Cigar That Is Too Strong

Starting with a full-bodied cigar is the most reliable way to have a poor first experience. The nicotine intensity overwhelms the palate before any real appreciation of flavour is possible. Always progress from mild to strong, never the other way around.

Starting with a Large Vitola

A 7-inch cigar is a significant commitment, and for a beginner, it is frequently too much. The longer the cigar, the more nicotine is absorbed over time. A Robusto or Corona is the sensible choice: long enough to appreciate the blend’s development, yet short enough to finish comfortably.

Ignoring Construction Quality

Before lighting, inspect the cigar. Roll it gently between your thumb and forefinger: it should feel consistently firm with no hard spots or soft, spongy areas. Examine the wrapper for cracks, tears, or discoloured spots. Check the foot for even, well-packed filler. A poorly constructed cigar will deliver an uneven burn and a frustrating draw regardless of the blend inside.

Choosing Your First Cigar at Pinstripe Bar Ubud

A person holding a rocks glass of whisky over a glass table while another hand holds a Lubinski lion-emblazoned ashtray with a lit cigar resting on it, with wisps of blue smoke rising and a red-velvet-lined wooden cigar box open in the background

Pinstripe Bar’s cigar humidor is one of the finest selections of premium cigars in Bali, featuring prestigious brands such as Cohiba, Cuaba, Davidoff, La Galera, and Cavalier, with the Cohiba Behike Collection as a standout offering. The designated cigar terrace overlooks a jungle valley, creating an atmosphere suited to the unhurried pace of a first cigar experience.

Exploring a Premium Cigar Selection Bali

The humidor at Pinstripe Bar features profiles ranging from creamy and mild to earthy and complex, ensuring a well-matched starting point for every palate. The team takes time to understand your preferences before making a recommendation, treating the selection process with the same seriousness they bring to the cocktail menu.

Finding a Cigar That Matches Your Preferences

Arriving with a sense of your flavour preferences helps the team guide you quickly to the right choice. If you enjoy smooth, creamy flavours, a milder wrapper, and a Dominican blend, it’s a natural fit. If you prefer something with a little more character, a medium-bodied selection with gentle spice and earthiness may suit you better. The team at Pinstripe Bar is well-equipped to navigate both.

Pairing Your Cigar with a Cocktail

A cocktail bar in Ubud with this depth of cigar knowledge naturally extends the experience to pairing. At Pinstripe Bar, the recommended pairings are specific and considered: a smooth Cohiba with a classic Old Fashioned, a La Galera with a refreshing Martini, or a Cuaba with a spicy Margarita for those who prefer something with greater depth. The drink should complement the cigar, not compete with it.

Begin your cigar journey at Pinstripe Bar, where a cocktail bar in Ubud meets one of Bali’s finest premium cigar selections. The team will help you choose well, pair thoughtfully, and enjoy your first cigar exactly as it should be: without rush, without guesswork, and with a well-made cocktail alongside. Your first cigar deserves the right setting. Reserve a table at Pinstripe Bar in Ubud and let the evening take its time.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions below cover what beginners ask when standing in front of a humidor for the first time. The answers are straightforward, and the team at Pinstripe Bar is on hand to take you further whenever you are ready.

1. How Do You Choose Your First Cigar

Start by considering time, strength, and occasion. Choose a mild- to medium-strength cigar in a Robusto or Corona format for your first experience. Ask the team at the humidor for guidance. A good tobacconist will ask about your flavour preferences and recommend accordingly. Avoid full-bodied cigars until you have a clear sense of what you enjoy.

2. What Are the Best Cigars for Beginners

Connecticut shade-wrapped cigars from reputable brands are the most consistent recommendation for beginners. Within the Pinstripe Bar humidor, the team can guide you toward mild and medium profiles from the Cohiba, La Galera, and Cavalier ranges, all offering quality construction without overwhelming the palate.

3. How Strong Should a Beginner Cigar Be

Mild to mild-medium is the appropriate starting point. This allows you to experience the flavour and ritual of cigar smoking without the nicotine intensity that can cause dizziness or discomfort in those who are new to it. As your palate develops, you can gradually progress toward medium- and full-bodied selections.

4. How Long Does a Cigar Usually Last

A Corona (5½ inches) lasts approximately 55 minutes. A Robusto (5 inches) takes around 50 minutes. A Toro (6 inches) offers approximately 65 minutes of smoking time. For a first cigar, a Robusto or Corona is the right choice: long enough to experience the full development of the blend, short enough to complete without feeling overwhelmed.

Such a great venue hidden right in the rice fields… incredible atmosphere! So stylish and jazzzy! Was admired by the live band - my favorite saxophone and grand piano with beautiful vocal..! Took me to Chicago…

Thanks a lot for your great service and this exclusive vibe that you bring to Ubud!

As a founder of dance show in Bali I enjoyed this cocktail so much 😃🍸💫
We had a wonderful evening in this bar with its unique and charming decor. The staff is attentive and helps make this a party, a little extra for the cocktails vs. the food, which is still very good!

Such a beautiful, quiet hidden gem in Ubud.

I stumbled upon this place when I was searching up places that did live jazz in Bali, and I made a reservation for a Thursday evening as they only do live music on Thursdays and Fridays. This lovely bar is nestled in Viceroy Bali, and it is an absolutely gorgeous property.

On that evening, I was attended to by Chagga and Dewa, who were both incredibly attentive. The staff were all very friendly and it was great making small talk with them. It was lovely meeting them. The service was top-notch, and I was escorted to my seat and then to my car when I was ready to leave.

The food was excellent - very fresh and flavourful. Portions are a little on the smaller side since it comes from their fine dining restaurant, Apéritif, next door. But everything was yummy and served promptly.

The drinks however, were the star of the show. Each cocktail on their menu has a story and is inspired by an influential figure. I enjoyed hearing about how they conjured up each one, and the drinks themselves were excellent.

Live music was on point as well. I wish I could have stayed a bit longer to enjoy but I suppose I’ll just have to come back sometime :) Chagga shared that the live music on Fridays is more akin to proper jazz. To round off the evening, Chagga gave me some free martini shots which were incredibly smooth and strong.

Thank you for the spectacular time - I can’t wait to be back!

Really lovely bar in Bali, highly recommend. We made a reservation for the bar (only) and when we showed up, we were the only guests. But that did not make for an awkward evening! The bartenders were lovely, really knowledgeable and fun and we had a great conversation. Later other guests showed up and the vibe was lovely, relaxed and warm.

The cocktails are also excellent and made with high-quality spirits so that we did not feel it the next day! And the small food items we ordered from the menu - which includes dinner if you are interested - were also very good.

Highly recommend this bar and would be happy to come back!

10/10 atmosphere, 10/10 cocktails.

Super friendly staff helping you with recommendations and suggestions, all while making some absolutely perfect cocktails.

They range cocktails based on strongness, fruitiness, so it’s easy to pick one based on your favourite spirit.

The only caveat here is that although there is a food menu, even the main dishes are “tasting size”, as they are brought from the fine dining restaurant Aperitif. But even so, the venison wellington is out of this world.

A little surprise find when we’re googling live jazz venues, nested in Viceroy hotel. Beautiful Great Gatsby themed bar with 1920s New York vibe, dark interiors and the best service crew.

We’re well looked after by the team, and special thanks to Changga the lead bar tender who made our cocktails - every order was exquisite, with a lot of depth and taste. Easily one of our best finds in Ubud.

Do yourself a favour and go to Pinstripe Bar when in Ubud!!! We had an exceptional evening … the bar is beautifully setup with its 1930’s vibe (including some props scattered around like the old pistol I had such fun playing with), the cocktails are amazing and full of sensory experiences whether it’s dry ice, smoked wormwood, peacock feathers and much more, food is great coming out of the adjoining restaurant kitchen.

We’re not smokers but we had such fun heading into the cigar room and choosing a cigar and sitting on the balcony puffing on a cigar and drinking a whisky sour.

But the best part of the evening is easily the staff!!! Each of the mixologists were absolutely amazing, not just with drinks, but being so fun, engaging and entertaining in all the ways you want. A massive thank you Changgu, Eric and the team - you made our night special.

Oh and read the menu and learn a bit about 1930’s Ubud. So interesting!!
We were gifted with a beautiful night out and treated to one of Balis finest evenings. Exquisite food, impeccable ambiance and without a doubt in my mind, one of the best cocktail mixologist there is. Words do not do this place justice. Definitely an experience we will never forget. PS The deserts are truly incredible as was the Lobster tortellini.

Some say it’s hard to pin down what takes a cocktail bar from good to great. But I disagree as you only have to step inside Pinstripe Bar to see outstanding in action.

It’s apparent in the warm welcome, the professional and assured service. It is on display in the curated cocktail list which are made with the world’s top spirit brands and each with a story behind them.

Not only that but the sense of place is at Pinstripe Bar is incredible as it seamlessly combines Balinese hospitality together with a 1930’s speakeasy vibe.

All guest need to do is settle in, peruse the menu and let this magical experience begin. Cocktails offer incredible flavour combinations including native Balinese ingredients, they magically transform colour in the glass and appear topped with smoke filled bubbles for impact.

This theatre adds another level to the experience of enjoying creative cocktails with the team at Pinstripe Bar. Combined with stunning architecture, outstanding food and the sheer scale of the venue makes Pinstripe Bar a must-visit on visit to Bali.

I went to Pinstripe while me and some friends had a staycation in Tegalalang for the weekend. After had dinner we decided to go check the bar at Pinstripe to get maybe one or two glass of margarita. Once I saw their cocktails menu, I had difficulties to choose between their well-crafted menu. Then Panji, the head mixologist served us a welcome drinks, I never expect the taste to be sooo delicious. From there I totally forgot the margarita and just let Panji surprise me with the magical taste of the cocktails that are so delicious I cannot stop sipping them. I tried to guess the ingredients Panji use in my cocktails, which of course mostly failed. The cocktails ingredients are source locally which really interesting because many of them usually use as cooking ingredients.
Definitely will come back to try all the menu.

This is one of my favourite cocktail bars in Ubud! Pinstripe is a must visit bar that is great to visit solo or with a group of friends. They have a huge range of premium spirits, if you are into tequila, gin or whiskeys, this place has the biggest range in Ubud.

The cocktails are really inventive and aesthetic. Personally I love the Mezcal one with the peacock feather, it is delicious and the flavours are balanced perfectly.

The atmosphere is cosy yet it’s a large space with an indoor and outside terrace with jungle views. Perfect place to sit of an afternoon with cocktails or wine and then move inside for the lively atmosphere at night time.

This bar is really unique and I recommend to all my friends visiting Bali to make sure they don’t miss out on visiting!

This is simply as good as a bar gets. It is somewhat hidden and more a speak easy than a bar. Staff is impeccably talented. The atmosphere is perfect right down to the smallest detail. I only wish we went here earlier. It may just be the best bar experience in Bali, and that is truly quite that statement.

Exquisite drinks. Didn’t eat this time. Will be back 100%.

Come here if you value:
- exceptionally drinks with presentation
- fluent English speaking, attentive waitstaff
- a low-key vibe, fancy atmosphere, tastefully decorative and clean facilities that sets a 1950s mood

Went here an hour before closing for nightcaps. And no they didn’t kick us out even after it was closed. Managed to have 4 cocktails between two people plus complimentary welcome AND send off drinks. The send off drink is that light purple potion, which I forget the name of, and it’s unforgettably delicious.

Smoking allowed on the deck area. Think cigars are available for purchase.

Look forward to returning for more poisons.
