The Difference Between Machine-Made and Hand-Rolled Cigars

A person holding a rocks glass of whisky over a glass table while another hand holds a Lubinski lion-emblazoned ashtray with a lit cigar resting on it, with wisps of blue smoke rising and a red-velvet-lined wooden cigar box open in the background

At Pinstripe Bar, a cocktail bar in Ubud where the cigar humidor sits alongside one of Bali’s finest selections of premium spirits, the question of hand-rolled vs machine-made cigars often comes up. It is a reasonable question, particularly for guests approaching a humidor for the first time. This guide is for those who want to know the difference before they choose.

What Is a Machine-Made Cigar

Machine-made cigars are produced on mechanised rolling lines using reconstituted tobacco binders, a sheet material pressed from tobacco by-products rather than whole leaf. The process is designed for efficiency and consistency: each cigar emerges with a uniform weight, diameter, and shape, delivering a predictable flavour profile and a fast, even burn.

For a casual smoker or someone trying cigars for the first time, a machine-made cigar is a reasonable starting point. The draw is easier, the flavour lighter, and the lower price honestly reflects the production method.

What Is a Hand-Rolled Cigar

A hand-rolled cigar is the work of a torcedor, a skilled artisan who selects and layers whole-leaf tobacco by hand, assembling the filler, binder, and wrapper with a precision built over years of training. The result is a cigar that carries the character of its maker as much as its tobacco.

Premium hand-rolled cigars are distinguishable not only in construction but in the experience of smoking them. The flavour develops in thirds, shifting from the lighter, brighter notes of the first third through a richer, more complex middle, before settling into a deeper finish. No two cigars are entirely alike, and that variation is part of what the experienced smoker values.

The Torcedor and the Art of Rolling

The torcedor trains for years before producing cigars of consistently high quality. The tension applied to the filler, the angle of the binder, and the precision of the cap are products of embodied knowledge that a machine can approximate but never fully replicate.

Whole Leaf Tobacco versus Reconstituted Binders

In a hand-rolled cigar, the binder is whole-leaf tobacco, selected for strength and flexibility. In a machine-made cigar, it is typically a reconstituted sheet, which burns differently and contributes less to flavour complexity. This single difference accounts for much of what separates the two categories.

Hand-Rolled vs Machine-Made Cigars Side by Side

The clearest way to understand the hand-rolled vs machine-made cigars debate is to compare them across the criteria that actually matter when you sit down to smoke. Beyond the production method, several practical differences shape what ends up in your hand and what you experience from first light to final draw.

CategoryHand-Rolled CigarMachine-Made Cigar
Tobacco100% natural aged whole-leaf tobaccoShort-filler with scraps, stems, and possible additives
FillerLong filler running the full lengthShort-filler or chopped tobacco
BinderCoarse natural tobacco leafReconstituted tobacco or ground tobacco with adhesive
WrapperWhole natural tobacco leaf, smooth and oilyOften treated with additives; duller appearance
BurnSlow, even, and coolFaster and hotter
FlavourLayered, complex, and evolvingConsistent but comparatively flat
DrawCalibrated by the torcedor by feelUniform but less nuanced
AgeingBenefits significantly from proper storageLittle to no ageing benefit
CostHigher, reflecting skilled labour and qualityLower, reflecting automated production
Quality ControlArtisan attention at every stageConsistent output, less individual scrutiny

A premium hand-rolled cigar has a smooth-to-the-touch wrapper with a subtle sheen and a fine, even texture. The seam is nearly invisible, and the cap is neatly applied. Holding the two side by side, the difference in craft is apparent before a single match is struck.

How to Spot a Handmade Cigar

Identifying a premium hand-rolled cigar before purchase is straightforward once you know what to look for. Examine the wrapper seam: in a handmade cigar, it is tight and nearly invisible. Check the foot: the filler should be evenly distributed with no gaps. Press gently along the barrel and look for even firmness throughout.

The weight is also telling. A premium hand-rolled cigar feels substantial but balanced in the hand, with a cap that is cleanly applied and flush with the wrapper. These are the marks of a torcedor working to a high standard.

Are Hand-Rolled Cigars Better

The honest answer is that neither style wins outright. Hand-rolled cigars offer a richer, more layered smoking experience built on natural aged tobacco, whole-leaf fillers, and craftsmanship developed over years of training. Cigar enthusiasts tend to favour them for their depth of flavour, ageing potential, and the ritual they invite. Machine-made cigars are designed for consistency and convenience, which has its own legitimate value depending on what you want from the evening.

The distinction worth understanding is that hand-rolled and machine-made cigars suit different occasions and different smokers. What matters is knowing which one matches the evening you are planning.

Can Machine-Made Cigars Be Aged

Ageing is largely the domain of hand-rolled cigars. When stored correctly in a humidor, hand-rolled cigars benefit from time: the flavours mellow, the blend integrates, and the overall smoking experience improves considerably over months or years. Long-filler tobacco and natural wrappers retain moisture well, which makes this development possible.

Machine-made cigars are generally produced to be smoked soon after purchase. The short-filler tobacco and reconstituted wrapper material do not respond to ageing in the same way, and extended storage offers little benefit. For anyone building a long-term collection with a view to ageing, hand-rolled cigars are the clear choice.

Which Should Beginners Choose

Warmly lit humidor shelves displaying an extensive collection of premium cigars in open wooden boxes including a featured Bellas Artes box rated #1, alongside a small oak aging barrel, a martini glass with olives, and cigar boxes inscribed with "We All Have Our Reasons"

There is no single answer, but the most useful guidance is to consider budget and curiosity in equal measure. A machine-made cigar is a reasonable introduction for someone who wants a reliable, affordable smoke without committing to the full hand-rolled experience. For a beginner who is genuinely curious about flavour, a milder hand-rolled cigar is worth the investment from the first session.

At Pinstripe Bar, the team makes this decision considerably easier. The selection spans profiles from creamy and mild to earthy and complex, and the guidance offered at the humidor is tailored to where you are in your experience. Beginning with a well-chosen hand-rolled cigar in the right setting is, by most accounts, the more memorable way to start.

Why Premium Hand-Rolled Cigars Suit a Cocktail Bar Setting

There is a natural affinity between a hand-rolled cigar and a well-made cocktail. Both reward patience, both develop in complexity over time, and both are best appreciated without rushing. At Pinstripe Bar, a cocktail bar in Ubud with a curated cigar humidor showcasing Asia’s finest selection, this pairing is treated with quiet attention and respect for ritual.

The designated cigar terrace at Pinstripe Bar overlooks Ubud’s picturesque jungle, creating an atmosphere as unhurried as the cigar itself. The humidor features prestigious brands including Cohiba, Cuaba, Davidoff, La Galera, and Cavalier, with the Cohiba Behike Collection among its finest offerings.

Choosing Your First Hand-Rolled Cigar at Pinstripe Bar

For guests new to premium hand-rolled cigars, the Pinstripe Bar team will guide you through the selection based on your experience level and flavour preference. The pairings here are specific and considered: a smooth Cohiba with a classic Old Fashioned, a La Galera with a refreshing Martini, or a Cuaba with a spicy Margarita for those who prefer something deeper.

The cigar humidor features a range of profiles, from creamy sweet blends to earthy, spicy options, ensuring there is a well-matched starting point for every palate. A premium hand-rolled cigar chosen with the team’s guidance, paired with a cocktail from The Clairvoyant menu, is one of the more considered ways to spend an evening in Ubud.

The difference between hand-rolled and machine-made cigars is real, and it is worth experiencing for yourself. Reserve your table, step into the humidor, and let the evening take its time.

Such a great venue hidden right in the rice fields… incredible atmosphere! So stylish and jazzzy! Was admired by the live band - my favorite saxophone and grand piano with beautiful vocal..! Took me to Chicago…

Thanks a lot for your great service and this exclusive vibe that you bring to Ubud!

As a founder of dance show in Bali I enjoyed this cocktail so much 😃🍸💫
We had a wonderful evening in this bar with its unique and charming decor. The staff is attentive and helps make this a party, a little extra for the cocktails vs. the food, which is still very good!

Such a beautiful, quiet hidden gem in Ubud.

I stumbled upon this place when I was searching up places that did live jazz in Bali, and I made a reservation for a Thursday evening as they only do live music on Thursdays and Fridays. This lovely bar is nestled in Viceroy Bali, and it is an absolutely gorgeous property.

On that evening, I was attended to by Chagga and Dewa, who were both incredibly attentive. The staff were all very friendly and it was great making small talk with them. It was lovely meeting them. The service was top-notch, and I was escorted to my seat and then to my car when I was ready to leave.

The food was excellent - very fresh and flavourful. Portions are a little on the smaller side since it comes from their fine dining restaurant, Apéritif, next door. But everything was yummy and served promptly.

The drinks however, were the star of the show. Each cocktail on their menu has a story and is inspired by an influential figure. I enjoyed hearing about how they conjured up each one, and the drinks themselves were excellent.

Live music was on point as well. I wish I could have stayed a bit longer to enjoy but I suppose I’ll just have to come back sometime :) Chagga shared that the live music on Fridays is more akin to proper jazz. To round off the evening, Chagga gave me some free martini shots which were incredibly smooth and strong.

Thank you for the spectacular time - I can’t wait to be back!

Really lovely bar in Bali, highly recommend. We made a reservation for the bar (only) and when we showed up, we were the only guests. But that did not make for an awkward evening! The bartenders were lovely, really knowledgeable and fun and we had a great conversation. Later other guests showed up and the vibe was lovely, relaxed and warm.

The cocktails are also excellent and made with high-quality spirits so that we did not feel it the next day! And the small food items we ordered from the menu - which includes dinner if you are interested - were also very good.

Highly recommend this bar and would be happy to come back!

10/10 atmosphere, 10/10 cocktails.

Super friendly staff helping you with recommendations and suggestions, all while making some absolutely perfect cocktails.

They range cocktails based on strongness, fruitiness, so it’s easy to pick one based on your favourite spirit.

The only caveat here is that although there is a food menu, even the main dishes are “tasting size”, as they are brought from the fine dining restaurant Aperitif. But even so, the venison wellington is out of this world.

A little surprise find when we’re googling live jazz venues, nested in Viceroy hotel. Beautiful Great Gatsby themed bar with 1920s New York vibe, dark interiors and the best service crew.

We’re well looked after by the team, and special thanks to Changga the lead bar tender who made our cocktails - every order was exquisite, with a lot of depth and taste. Easily one of our best finds in Ubud.

Do yourself a favour and go to Pinstripe Bar when in Ubud!!! We had an exceptional evening … the bar is beautifully setup with its 1930’s vibe (including some props scattered around like the old pistol I had such fun playing with), the cocktails are amazing and full of sensory experiences whether it’s dry ice, smoked wormwood, peacock feathers and much more, food is great coming out of the adjoining restaurant kitchen.

We’re not smokers but we had such fun heading into the cigar room and choosing a cigar and sitting on the balcony puffing on a cigar and drinking a whisky sour.

But the best part of the evening is easily the staff!!! Each of the mixologists were absolutely amazing, not just with drinks, but being so fun, engaging and entertaining in all the ways you want. A massive thank you Changgu, Eric and the team - you made our night special.

Oh and read the menu and learn a bit about 1930’s Ubud. So interesting!!
We were gifted with a beautiful night out and treated to one of Balis finest evenings. Exquisite food, impeccable ambiance and without a doubt in my mind, one of the best cocktail mixologist there is. Words do not do this place justice. Definitely an experience we will never forget. PS The deserts are truly incredible as was the Lobster tortellini.

Some say it’s hard to pin down what takes a cocktail bar from good to great. But I disagree as you only have to step inside Pinstripe Bar to see outstanding in action.

It’s apparent in the warm welcome, the professional and assured service. It is on display in the curated cocktail list which are made with the world’s top spirit brands and each with a story behind them.

Not only that but the sense of place is at Pinstripe Bar is incredible as it seamlessly combines Balinese hospitality together with a 1930’s speakeasy vibe.

All guest need to do is settle in, peruse the menu and let this magical experience begin. Cocktails offer incredible flavour combinations including native Balinese ingredients, they magically transform colour in the glass and appear topped with smoke filled bubbles for impact.

This theatre adds another level to the experience of enjoying creative cocktails with the team at Pinstripe Bar. Combined with stunning architecture, outstanding food and the sheer scale of the venue makes Pinstripe Bar a must-visit on visit to Bali.

I went to Pinstripe while me and some friends had a staycation in Tegalalang for the weekend. After had dinner we decided to go check the bar at Pinstripe to get maybe one or two glass of margarita. Once I saw their cocktails menu, I had difficulties to choose between their well-crafted menu. Then Panji, the head mixologist served us a welcome drinks, I never expect the taste to be sooo delicious. From there I totally forgot the margarita and just let Panji surprise me with the magical taste of the cocktails that are so delicious I cannot stop sipping them. I tried to guess the ingredients Panji use in my cocktails, which of course mostly failed. The cocktails ingredients are source locally which really interesting because many of them usually use as cooking ingredients.
Definitely will come back to try all the menu.

This is one of my favourite cocktail bars in Ubud! Pinstripe is a must visit bar that is great to visit solo or with a group of friends. They have a huge range of premium spirits, if you are into tequila, gin or whiskeys, this place has the biggest range in Ubud.

The cocktails are really inventive and aesthetic. Personally I love the Mezcal one with the peacock feather, it is delicious and the flavours are balanced perfectly.

The atmosphere is cosy yet it’s a large space with an indoor and outside terrace with jungle views. Perfect place to sit of an afternoon with cocktails or wine and then move inside for the lively atmosphere at night time.

This bar is really unique and I recommend to all my friends visiting Bali to make sure they don’t miss out on visiting!

This is simply as good as a bar gets. It is somewhat hidden and more a speak easy than a bar. Staff is impeccably talented. The atmosphere is perfect right down to the smallest detail. I only wish we went here earlier. It may just be the best bar experience in Bali, and that is truly quite that statement.

Exquisite drinks. Didn’t eat this time. Will be back 100%.

Come here if you value:
- exceptionally drinks with presentation
- fluent English speaking, attentive waitstaff
- a low-key vibe, fancy atmosphere, tastefully decorative and clean facilities that sets a 1950s mood

Went here an hour before closing for nightcaps. And no they didn’t kick us out even after it was closed. Managed to have 4 cocktails between two people plus complimentary welcome AND send off drinks. The send off drink is that light purple potion, which I forget the name of, and it’s unforgettably delicious.

Smoking allowed on the deck area. Think cigars are available for purchase.

Look forward to returning for more poisons.
